Stripe hold: why funds are frozen, and 3 things to do now
A payout hold, a reserve, or a review loop: three different reasons your money is not moving, three different fixes. The fastest way to lose days is treating them as the same problem. Here is how to tell them apart, verified against Stripe's own documentation.

The problem
Your Stripe balance shows money that is not paying out: a notice about a review, a reserve on new payouts, funds stuck "available" but never landing in the bank, or a document request that was answered and then went quiet. The money is not gone, it is held, and holds clear faster when you respond to the exact mechanism holding it.
Why it happens
Stripe's own docs describe the mechanisms. The payout schedule determines when available balance moves to your bank. A minimum balance you set (or that was set for you) keeps money in the account "to manage your cash flow and cover potential refunds, disputes, and fees". Reserves hold a portion of payouts for the same reason, applied when Stripe assesses higher risk on an account. And an account review can freeze payouts entirely while documents are checked. None of these mean the money is lost; each has a different release path.

Direct quote (Stripe Docs, "Payouts"): "Your payout schedule determines when Stripe sends money to your bank account. You can select your preferred payout schedule during onboarding or update it any time in the Stripe Dashboard."
The 3 things to do now
- Find out exactly what kind of hold it is. Open the Dashboard and read the notice or the account state precisely: is it a review, a reserve, a payout schedule, or a document request? The words matter. "Funds under review" and "reserve applied" have different release paths, and answering the wrong one wastes a cycle. Screenshot everything: the notice, the balance page, the payout history.
- Answer the actual request with matching evidence. If documents were requested, send exactly what was asked for: the evidence that matches the request, not the documents you assume they want. This is the most common failure we see: a merchant sends bank statements when the request was for fulfilment proof, and the review bounces. Name each document against each requirement, and keep a copy of what you sent and when.
- Keep the thread in one place, with the account owner on it. Stripe requires the account owner on the case thread. Respond through the official channels only, stay on the same ticket, and do not open parallel requests that split the story. If a dispute or chargeback is part of the picture, do not start a second loop while the first is being reviewed: competing requests slow both down.
Do not withdraw to a new bank account to "get around" the hold, do not move to a fresh Stripe account while one is under review, and do not bulk-refund customers to drain the balance. All three look like exactly the behaviour the review is checking for. The release path is evidence and time, not manoeuvring.
When to get help
The £79 Stripe hold rescue covers the whole case: a root cause read of your notices and dashboard state, the evidence pack built to match the specific request, the appeal workflow mapped, and follow-up until the funds are released or you are refunded. If the case is one we refuse, we tell you before you pay.
Funds stuck in a review loop?
If a document request has already bounced once, the evidence pack needs to match the request precisely. That is what the rescue is for.

Different mechanisms, same result: money not paying out. Stripe's docs describe reserves as holding a portion of payouts to cover potential refunds, disputes, and fees, while payout delays follow the payout schedule and review holds freeze payouts until documents clear. Identify which one you are in before responding.
How long do Stripe holds last?
It depends entirely on the mechanism and how quickly the request is answered with matching evidence. There is no universal timeline in Stripe's docs; the review and reserve pages in the Dashboard state the current status, and that status moves when the evidence matches the request.
